The Wuppertal upside down mono rail.
A short extract of a movie by Fred Haering
The Wuppertal Rail Link.. It was 1962 when I was in Germany for the first time. I had seen a photo in a road atlas of this upside down public railway in Wuppertal . Since then I had always wanted to see it in real life. I believe that at that time monorail lines were unheard of in most parts of the world. In 2003 some 40 years later whilst we were visiting some friends who live in Cologne close to Wuppertal, we were given the chance to both see and use this Rail Link. We were amazed and suprised by its beauty and construction considering that it had been built over 100 years ago and is still providing effective and safe public transport The railway follows the course of, and is suspended above, a small river called the Wupper for a greater part of its round trip. The movie shows scenes taken from onboard the train as it travels along the rail. Fred Haering 2011 |
